NYSEG Scam Alert

June 9, 2017

Hi Somers,

Please be aware of a NYSEG scam. Someone saying they are from NYSEG recently called area residents. The caller ID said NYSEG800-572-1111 (which is actually a correct phone number). The person told the residents that their electricity was being turned off in 45 minutes and that they should have received a letter stating such 10 days earlier. They were told to call their Corporate Office "where the request wasfiled" to discuss. They were told to call 866-978-8510. Upon doing so they were asked to make a payment within 45 minutes to a location in Auburn, NY or the electricity would be disconnected. When residents asked what the account number was or where Auburn was located, the person hung up. If you call NYSEG (also 800-572-1111), they will verify your accounts are current and that the call was a scam. Please just hang up if you receive a call like this.
